ALAS

CHOREOGRAPHY BY NACHO DUATO

The decision to put on Alas was a brilliant move. Two internationally renowned artists, Slovenian theatre director Tomaz Pandur and choreographer Nacho Duato, came together in this unusual venture with a common goal: to seek a new vocabulary through a genuine fusion of disciplines, going above and beyond merely combining scenic languages. The result of this encounter is Alas, a comprehensive ballet that is neither theatre-dance nor dance-theatre, but rather the result of a “different work process that offers new ways of exploring for the theatre of the future”, according to its creators.

The main inspiration for Alas comes from the film Wings of Desire by Wim Wenders, about an angel who decides to relinquish his immortality in order to live among humans. Although it incorporates brief fragments of Peter Handke’s screenplay, the choreography does not draw an explicit parallel with the story line, although the subject remains present: man’s desire for immortality expressed through the eternal gravitational fight between heaven and earth. “In actual fact, this work is about solitude”, explains Pandur. “Man finds himself alone, faced with the huge question of time and infinity.  Among other things, that is why I always wanted to do this production with Duato, whom I consider above all to be a sculptor of time”.
