On the ground

Inadequate toilets, particularly for girls in higher‑education institutions, contribute to absenteeism and reduced academic participation.

Bhiwadi is located in the Tijara block (tehsil) of the Khairthal–Tijara district in Rajasthan. The district was created in 2023 following the administrative reorganisation of the former Alwar district.

Over time, Bhiwadi has become one of Rajasthan’s major industrial centres and forms part of the National Capital Region (NCR). It lies approximately 40–45 km from Gurugram and about 90 km from Jaipur.

During the past two decades, the city has experienced rapid industrial and urban growth. More than 2,500 industries — small, medium and large — operate in sectors such as manufacturing, automotive, pharmaceuticals, textiles and steel. This expansion has attracted a large migrant population, increasing demand for housing, education, healthcare and basic services.

Industrial growth has boosted enrolment at Government Girls College and Baba Mohanram Kissan Government College in Santhalka, creating an opportunity to strengthen educational infrastructure, particularly sanitation facilities, in line with Swachh Vidyalaya norms and recommended student‑to‑latrine ratios.

Current facilities require urgent attention: construction of new toilets for women and rehabilitation of damaged or non‑functional units. Their present condition compromises students’ health, dignity, safety and educational well‑being.
Installing filtration systems ensures safe drinking water free of contaminants, improving the health of students and staff.

Inadequate toilets discourage use, especially among girls, and may contribute to absenteeism and reduced academic participation.
The lack of handwashing stations increases the risk of poor hygiene, which favours the spread of waterborne diseases, infections, and other health issues. These challenges affect attendance, concentration and academic outcomes.

Installing adequate handwashing stations is essential to reduce these risks.

Sustainability prospects

Strengthening Management Committees plays a crucial role in maintaining facilities.

Empowered committees participate in decision‑making on maintenance and improvement of infrastructure, supervise the appropriate use of resources, and ensure the upkeep of facilities such as handwashing stations and toilets.

Their involvement in planning, monitoring, and maintenance helps establish sustainable practices and ensures a clean, healthy educational environment.

The organisation has a highly skilled team in programme management, monitoring and evaluation, knowledge management, advocacy, infrastructure construction and technical support.

The team updates its knowledge through workshops, seminars and learning processes derived from programmes implemented and evaluated at national and international levels, strengthening competencies in evidence‑based evaluation, technical design, innovation and sustainable approaches.
